Water isn’t just something to look at in the garden—
it’s also a sound, a scent, and a feeling.

Few gardens come complete with water features. But what nature didn’t provide, A Yard & A Half can. The splashing and trickling of a waterfall invites you into the garden and adds immeasurably to the romance of your landscape, blocking other noises and soothing your soul at the end of a busy day. It is the most peaceful element you can add to your yard, drawing birds, butterflies, frogs, and other wildlife to become part of the panorama of life in your garden.

Remember that the style of your water feature should complement your overall garden design.

Circular and square ponds are more formal.

Irregularly shaped ponds and winding streambeds are better suited to informal spaces.

Every garden needs a seat where you can relax, and this is most important in a water garden. Create a place for reflection by transforming your pond into a habitat for water plants, then add some koi or goldfish. Stones at the edge look natural, cover the pond liner, and gives the gardener a place to safely step when checking on the frogs which move in soon after the pond is complete.

In the heat of summer, water adds coolness. In the depths of winter, ice reflects the distant sun. Water invites you into the garden to hear its sighing and splashing. There are many styles of water features, including ponds, waterfalls, and even dry streambeds to convey the idea of water. Remember that the style of your water feature should complement your overall garden design.

Water

Design by: Christie Dustman

Water features help to break up large expanses of lawn which are so void of interest, and not very helpful to the ecology of the earth. Environmentalists call grass “green pavement” due to the difficulty rainwater experiences trying to soak into the ground system. Instead of being absorbed, rain falling on grass creates a system of rapid runoff, carrying harmful toxins like fertilizer into other, perhaps more delicate regions, and adding to the flooding problems along our paved roads. Consider that every time you decrease your lawn size, you enhance the life giving qualities of your garden. That’s a good thing!
