Walls divide space and define boundaries —
a critical element in creating your garden rooms.
Whether providing a place for your cat to bask in the sun or creating a shady spot for your woodland plants, walls are a statement in stone about the borders of your property. Walls reduce wind, provide a space to grow your more tender plants, and protect them from harsh weather. They are a screen when the view is undesirable, and filter noise as well as the neighbor's garage. Retaining walls are built to hold back soil while creating terraces and level changes in the garden. The word “paradise” comes from the Persian language, meaning “a walled place.”
A curved fieldstone wall can lift an enclosed garden to a slightly higher elevation.
A stately brick wall and steps can break a garden into separate spaces creating a definite sense of enclosure and shelter.
A fieldstone retaining wall is a boundary for a profusion of blooming plants, making an interesting setting for a house behind the garden.
Walls are interesting in every season, but perhaps their very best season is winter, when the garden is otherwise bare. Stone walls then rise above the snow, providing shelter for sleeping chipmunks, and define the beauty of your landscape by evoking the hand of nature. A good garden design demands structures that provide balance and interest throughout the year.
Roses, clematis, and honeysuckle are all lovely when climbing along cottage garden walls. In a more formal setting, espaliered fruit trees can provide a different and dramatic art form.
